ATC 2025 Championships
The 52nd Club Championship Finals Day at Andover Lawn Tennis Club promised close matches, some new champions and mixed weather.
Claire R and Jen F emerged as the first adult champions of the day, after a 6-3, 6-1 win against Clare T and Martha. The match was closer than the score would indicate, but the consistency of Claire and Jen, and the latter’s powerful serve, gave them the win.
The indoor courts proved invaluable as the rain had arrived, and the next matches were played there.
The mixed final saw Martha taking to the court again with partner Harvey S against Tom L and Emily P. Consistency and accuracy at the net again proved decisive. In spite of powerful, stylish ground shots from Tom and Emily, it was Martha and Harvey who won 6-1, 6-3.
The men’s doubles final saw Al W, alongside partner Adrian S, bidding for his first doubles win after many final appearances.
They were up against last year’s singles champion, Kyrill K, and Alex B. The first set went to Al and Adrian but Kyrill and Alex won the second. The championship tie break decider was tense and both teams had match points, but it was Al and Adrian who pipped the others at the post.
The ladies singles saw Amelia M, a Junior, who had done really well to reach the final, against Kate G. Amelia makes great shots but it was the more experienced Kate, who moved really well for every shot, who won 6-2, 6-1.
The men’s final was a repeat of last year’s, with Tom L against defending champion Kyrill K, who was going for a fourth win at the age of 21. The first set was cagey with both playing a little carefully. Kyrill won the inevitable tie break and from then on played more relaxed tennis with more power and ambition. Tom played his full part in making a great final, but it was Kyrill who emerged as champion again, 7-6, 6-3.
The senior singles were then played, with Claire R winning the ladies against Anastasia M. A convincing first set went to Claire 6-1, but Anastasia fought back and actually had a 5-1 lead before Claire rallied to win the second set 7-5.
Al W secured his second trophy of the day in the senior men’s singles against Andrew W. This was a closely contested match with Al winning the first set 6-3 and Andrew levelling things with a 7-6 win in the second. A championship tie break decided the match in Al’s favour.
The junior matches were greatly enjoyed by the watching parents, relatives and friends. Good play and sportsmanship was shown by all.

Thanks are due to Claire Reid and her organising team, chairman Tim Kelly and head coach James Mcintosh, and to TVBC Leader, Phil North, who was the guest of honour.
